About Us
Civil Engineering Association (CEA) is one of the largest students run organisations in India which is an amalgamation of students, scholars and faculty of Civil Engineering department, IIT Madras. Formed with the primary aim of exposing potential civil engineers to the challenges of the profession, CEA actively encourages the future engineers to celebrate the "joy of engineering". The association conducts workshops, professional events, sports events, along with social campaigns and lectures by great personalities to enhance the all-round development of students throughout the year. Along with the yearlong activities, CEA hosts annually a 3-day long CEA Fest which is a culmination of engineering competitions and workshops, serving as a launching platform for budding civil engineers from all over India.
Events
CEA INAUGURAL
The Inaugural is the introductory event of CEA and it gives an amazing start. It will be usually held in IC&SR auditorium and will be hosted by Convenors of CEA and the Head of the Department(HoD) , also along with the CEA Secretaries and Student Advisers of the respective year.The Chief guest shares his/her valuable experiences.Later, the CEA Theme and the tentative schedule of CEA Activities for the corresponding year will be announced.Generally, CEA Inaugural will be organised by CEA Nirmaan Team, but some events during the inaugural like Crossword puzzles, will be conducted by CEA.
CEA FRESHIE NIGHT
CEA kicks off its events this night.The event will be preceded by CEA Informal Night with freshers.The primary goal of this night is to make freshies bond well with each other and interact with seniors. This night comprises various competitions, games and some stunning cultural performances from freshies. A classic Mr.Freshie and Ms.Freshie competition will stand as the highlight of the night. This will be followed by informal interaction between seniors and freshies.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CHALLENGE
The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” The CEA sustainable design challenge provides a platform for students to design efficient and self sustainable infrastructure and systems that are more environmentally friendly. Participants are asked to design sustainable residential buildings of single storey and calculate the life cycle energy use. The evaluation parameters include cost of construction, materials chosen, the details provided to each life cycle phase, the overall cost of the building and life cycle energy of the building.
AQUANOMICS
Aquanomics comprehensively examines the full range of water problems and reveals measures that should be implemented to avoid the onset of possible “water crisis”. Aquanomics is an event where participants use their hydraulic and water resources engineering concepts to solve an ecological issue.This event will be conducted for two days, wherein the first day, a software workshop will be held for the participants and on the second day, they apply their practical and software skills to model, simulate and find an efficient solution to a real-life water related problem.
GEO GENIUS
This is a flagship event of the Geotechnical department of civil engineering. In most of the building failure cases, the root cause is ‘poor foundation’. Whether it is an earthquake or a hurricane, it is the foundation geology that decides the future of structure. In this edition of Geo Genius, participants are required to construct an embankment using recycled materials thereby enriching cost efficiency and solving the problem of waste disposal.
DEBATE
Debate is an indispensable characteristic of an individual that makes him/her put forward his/her perspective in analyzing a situation of social cause whether it be in favor or against. It helps them to develop confidence within, makes them an extrovert. CEA provides an opportunity to the students to express their views on a given topic with professors as a jury. The topics are from various disciplines of civil engineering to give them a feel.
QUIZ
CEA tests the knowledge of participants in different civil engineering fields through unique rounds consisting of exciting questions. The questions will be asked from the various fields of civil engineering and its industrial applications.Participants are required to unleash their intellectual skills to answer the challenging questions.CEA QUIZ encourages learning and understanding of civil engineering concepts in depth.The paradox in CEA is that it teaches you more than it tests you.
CONCRETE CHALLENGE
In today’s world, Concrete has become a very essential construction material and is used for constructing many famous skyscrapers, some of which include “Burj Khalifa” and “Petronas Twin Towers”. In CEA Fest 2020 participants were asked to prepare a concrete frame using steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC).Later, it is tested for its compressive strength and ultimate load capacity in flexure. The competition has always been offering participants a chance to explore and learn more of concrete technology.
MASTER BUILDER
Master Builder is an event in which participants will have to build a miniature model of a superstructure with given materials and constraints.The model is then tested for its axial load bearing capacity and load/weight ratio. Sometimes the model goes through vigorous load tests like earthquake simulation and high-speed wind tests. The model that withstands these ultimate testing conditions at its best with given constraints is considered the winner. The participants get a good dose of practical learning to complement their strong fundamentals.
PROJECT X (Modeling)
As the name suggests, modeling events require the participants to create a three-dimensional structure with the materials provided within a given time. This event provides a perfect competitive platform for all those who have an unexplained passion for building structures. Prerequisites required are basic knowledge of civil engineering especially structural engineering. The winners will be decided based on load bearing capacity, and aesthetics of the model made with the effective use of materials provided.Project X is the similar version of Modeling, but will be conducted during the semester time.
ENCODE STEEL
This event is a real test of participants' grey matter, designing skills and their creativity as a civil engineer. In this event participants will be asked to design a residential structure which includes designing of reinforced concrete slabs, beams, columns and corresponding steel reinforcements for a given loading and also with clear cost analysis of structure. With a huge participation over the past few years, this event has been recognized as one of the best events in CEA.
BON-AUTOROUTIER
In recent years, traffic congestion has become a major problem in many parts of the world. One way to alleviate congestion is to manage the traffic efficiently by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In this event, participants come up with a signal timing strategy for two intersections of six-lane and four-lane, to reduce the average delay for commuters. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to students, making them think like a transport designer to find efficient solutions for an existing traffic plight and enhance their planning ability.
CASE STUDY
Case studies are the best practical exercise of your grey cells which makes use of all your mental faculties as well as your decision-making skills. These are one of the best teaching tools for enhancing the practical knowledge of students. In this event, the participants are required to solve failure case studies with a detailed analysis of a pre-chosen civil structure and present it in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. They use their problem-solving skills to come up with the solutions to the given problem. We believe that young ideas have the power to bring about the required change in the society.
POTENTIAL PROFESSOR
This is an event which provides a golden opportunity to showcase your potential to become a professor in front of top-notch jury.It not only tests the knowledge levels but also the ability to transferring knowledge. It will be held for 2 days consisting the prelims and finals, the students generally compete with a lot of spirit to get the title and impress the judges by skills, which shows their passion towards teaching. Professors and freshers take part as jury in this event.The event involves a learning process as well, since the participants can be questioned on the topics taught by the jury.
RESEARCH EXPO
Research Expo is one of the prime events conducted by CEA IIT M. The scholars of IIT M from various divisions of Civil Engineering come together to give exposure to the vivid research works happening in the field of Civil Engineering. It is a great opportunity for students to unfurl themselves towards the world of research. It is a wonderful platform for students to interact with IIT M scholars. The students will also be exposed to the research facilities through a lab tour to different research labs of the Civil Engineering Department.
CEA BADMINTON LEAGUE
Apart from technical events CEA also conducts sports like cricket and badminton.The Sports will be usually conducted by following certain norms similar to that of the original sport. CEA Badminton is the sport which shows tremendous participation.This will be conducted for two days. All the matches will run on with a lot of enthusiasm shown by participants and audience.Our Location
