Rajagopal K (Retired) was a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He received his Doctoral degree in Engineering Mechanics at the University of Florida, Gainesville, the USA, in 1985. Before that, he completed his B.tech degree in Civil Engineering at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological university, Andhra Pradesh, followed by an M. tech degree in Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. His research interest includes Geosynthetic reinforced structures, slope stability, ground Improvement, and Geomechanics. He has more than 35 years of teaching and research experience and has published 120+ and 70+ papers in National/International conferences and Journals. Also, he has been invited to deliver several keynote lectures at the National and International conference. He has guided 15 Ph.D. and 10 MS students to date, and currently, there are 8 Ph.D. students under his guidance. Besides that, he has also mentored 20 B.tech projects and 38 M.Tech projects till now. Furthermore, his contribution is prominent in several other sponsored research projects. He is an active member of the International Geosynthetics, Indian Geotechnical Society, a lifetime member of Indian Society for Technical Education and Indian Society for Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling Technology, and several other committees. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Geotextiles and Geomembranes, Indian Geotechnical Journal, and Journal Sadhana. He developed the geosynthetics engineering laboratory at IIT Madras with several facilities that are unique in India. He conducted various short-term courses and organized workshops and conferences. He has been honored with multiple awards for his academic achievements. Some of these include Tau Beta Pi at the University of Florida, Institute Merit Prize at IIT Madras, Commemorative award, and several other best paper awards. He provided consultancy services to several private and public sector organizations like Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Skanska Cementations Pvt. Ltd., VSL Reinforced Earth Ltd., MBN Anchored Earth Limited, Tamilnadu Housing Board, Chennai Petro Chemical Ltd., Southern Railways, etc. His services in academic and Industries are incredible. His constant support and guidance to the students helped them to perform better and achieve their goals.
