Dr. Surender Singh serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, specialization of Transportation Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. He completed his undergraduate studies in civil engineering in 2013 from DCRUST Murthal, a state government college in Haryana. He went on to earn his M.Tech in civil engineering (in pavement engineering specialization) from NIT Kurukshetra in 2015. His research on concrete pavements during his master’s program earned him the prestigious Indian Roads Congress National Medal. He completed his PhD at IIT Roorkee in 2018, where he worked extensively on the valorization of recycled materials for concrete pavement applications. His doctoral research was recognized with the Best Thesis Award from INAE in 2019. He joined IIT Madras in April 2019, and has since been actively involved in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in highway engineering and concrete pavement materials and design. In 2023, he was honoured with the IIT Madras Young Faculty Recognition Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research. His research group focuses on pavement recycling, primarily identifying the mechanisms governing the performance of concrete pavements made with alternative/recycled aggregates and developing innovative valorization techniques. He has co-authored around 50 journal articles (Scopus indexed) related to concrete pavements and has led numerous projects funded by various ministries. With this funding, he set up a state-of-the-art laboratory to simulate the C&D waste recycling process, a rare facility that is unique on a global scale. Surender is actively involved in organizations responsible for developing civil engineering infrastructure standards. Also, he currently chairs the RILEM Youth Council, an international society for construction materials. Surender was honored with the prestigious INAE Young Associate Award in Civil Engineering in 2023, and in 2024, received the Institute Research and Development Award for Excellence in Research and Development (Early Career category).
