Dr. Elango Lakshmanan  has over 38 years of experience and a broad interest in hydrogeology. Before joining IITM, he served as a Professor of Hydrogeology at Anna University, Chennai. He was the Head of the Department from January 2003 to December 2005 and again from June 2015 to June 2022. He completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Birmingham under the Indian National Science Academy and The Royal Society, London fellowship programme. He has participated in various professional training programs at the Danish Hydraulic Institute, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Newcastle, UK, and Ruhr University, Germany. He served as the Vice President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences from 2013 to 2019. He is the Co-President of the International Commission of Water Quality of IAHS. Dr. Elango Lakshmanan coordinated a significant capacity-building program for the State Water Resources Department's officers, funded by The World Bank through the Hydrology Project.Professor Elango Lakshmanan has organised four international workshops sponsored by UNESCO's International Hydrology Programme. He has successfully led nine international research projects supported by organisations such as the Department of Science and Technology, the University Grants Commission, the European Commission, the British Geological Survey, the Australian Research Council, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he has conducted 25 national research projects sponsored by MHRD, CSIR, UGC, DST, BRNS, SERB, MoES, and DoS. He was instrumental in obtaining grants under the University Grants Commission's Special Assistance Programme(SAP) Phase I, II & III and the Department of Science and Technology's FIST Phase I, II & III for the Geology Department. He was pivotal in getting substantial grants for Anna University under Phase I and II of the University Grants Commission's Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area (Environmental Sciences). Through these sponsored research projects, Dr. Lakshmanan has guided thirty-three research fellows to complete their PhDs and mentored eight postdoctoral fellows until 2023.Furthermore, he has accomplished over 39 industrial consultancy projects for organisations such as the Department of Atomic Energy, PWD, MECON, Larsen and Toubro, HCC, Gammon India, Gimpex, and others. As part of his academic and research assignments, he has travelled extensively to countries including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Singapore, Sweden, South Korea, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, UK and the USA. He is serving on the editorial board of leading journals.
