Welcome to the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Division. This division was earlier known as Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering division. The hydraulic laboratory was established in 1969 with significant cooperation from German Universities. In 2000, with the introduction of Environmental Engineering Graduate Program this division has been renamed as Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Division and conducting advance research in both the fields
Environmental Engineering laboratory is equipped with most of the sophisticated instruments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer for heavy metals analysis in ppb levels Gas Chromatographs, Ion Chromatograph and a high performance liquid chromatograph for analyzing organic and inorganic compounds. The laboratory is also equipped with UV-Visible Spectrometer, Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, Ion Meter, Sonicator, Flue Gas Analyzer, Methane Analyzer, Environmental Dust Monitor (mass and number), Indoor Air Quality Monitor, etc.
The division has a well equipped micro-biology laboratory to enrich, isolate, and identify micro-organisms. The UG / PG laboratory is equipped with all the instruments for air quality, water quality and wastewater analysis, solid waste and hazardous waste characterization.
The Civil Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, offers the following graduate programmes in the areas of environmental engineering, hydraulic and water resources engineering.
- Master of Technology (M. Tech.)
- Master of Science (MS)
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Master of Technology (M.Tech)
The M.Tech. programme imparts advanced knowledge in the field of specialization and prepares them for a bright career in industries and research organizations with in India and abroad. The programme will be of 2 years spanning over 4 semesters consisting of core courses, elective courses and a project work. The courses are to be done in the first 2 semesters and the later 2 semesters are devoted entirely for the project work. In the first 2 semesters, the number of contact hours per week is 32. In addition, the students are required to undergo an industrial training for 6 to 8 weeks during the summer break after the second semester.
Candidates who have qualified for the award of the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology who have a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score with minimum percentile fixed by the institute are eligible to apply for admission to the M. Tech programme. The applications from candidates sponsored by organisations recognized by the Institute and applications from foreign nationals received through proper channel are also considered for admission to the M. Tech programme and for these candidates GATE score is not essential.
M.S. and Ph.D. Programmes
The M.S. and Ph.D. programmes have research orientation. The scholars admitted to these programmes are groomed to carry out independent research in the emerging areas. They take up leading positions in the industries and government agencies engaged in research and development activities. Also, considerable number of scholars pursue academic career in institutions of excellence with in India and abroad.
Following are the requirements for the completion of the programmes:
Coursework: Minimum of 5 courses for MS and minimum of 4 courses for PhD are to be completed with good academic performance.
Thesis: The thesis work should demonstrate high quality research resulting in publications in refereed journals.
The PhD programme includes a comprehensive examination in addition to the above.
Categories of admission to M.S. and Ph.D. programmes:
- Full-time scholars with or without Institute fellowship or with project support.
- Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) for teachers of engineering colleges.
- External registration
- Part-time registration
Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from any recognized University with any of the specializations in Civil Engineering are eligible to apply for admission to the M.S. programme. Also, candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics/Applied Geology/ Geophysics with 2 years experience in Civil Engineering area, or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering/ Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology or Master’s degree in Environmental Science/Microbiology/Bio-Chemistry with 2 years experience in Civil Engineering are eligible to apply for admission to the M.S. programme.
Candidates with Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Ocean Engineering (including integrated M.Tech / M.E. degree) with First Class or equivalent grade for specialisation in Civil Engineering are eligible to apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme. Also, candidates with M.Tech or M.S. or equivalent degree in Engineering Mechanics/Aerospace Engineering / Agricultural Engineering / Environmental Engineering or M.Tech or M.S. or equivalent degree in Environmental Science & Engineering/Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology/ Applied Geology are eligible to apply for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

The division has two well equipped laboratories viz. Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory and Environmental Engineering Laboratory.
Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory
This laboratory is well equipped with table-top hydraulic models, different types of flumes, facility for physical model studies, excellent computational facilities, towing tank, and open air physical models.
Environmental Engineering Laboratory
The environmental engineering laboratory has almost all state of art equipments such as atomic absorption spectrometer, total carbon analyser, US-VIS spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, flue gas analyser, stack monitoring kit, ozonator, phase contrast microscope, flame photometer, laminar hood, Hach COD digestor etc
The major research areas in Environmental Engineering are: air and water quality monitoring, modelling and management, indoor air pollution, water and wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, bioremediation of contaminated sites and subsurface contaminant transport studies
The major research areas in Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering are: soft computing in water resources, hydrologic modelling, stochastic and spatial hydrology, computational hydraulics, conjunctive use of surface and ground water, aquifer modelling and management, fracture-rock matrix interactions, water resources planning and management, urban water supply and GIS/remote sensing applications
The faculty of the laboratory are also activily engaged in providing consultancy services in their areas of expertise to various Government and Private sector organisations. Some of the major client organisations include Madras Fertilisers Ltd, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Madras Port Trust, Central Pollution Control Board and others.
