The Department of Civil Engineering has been in existence since the inception of IIT Madras in 1959 and has grown into a full fledged department with specialisations in all the major areas of Civil Engineering. The departmental activities embrace Planning, Design, Construction and Management. The academic programmes of the Department of Civil Engineering are some of the best in the country and the world.

The selection to this programme is through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at the national level held every year during the month of April. Only about 1% of the candidates who appear for this examination are selected for admissions to different IITs. Details of this examination can be found at the JEE web site http://www.jee.iitm.ac.in.

Degree Requirements

The B.Tech. programme is a minimum of eight semester full time study programme. Students take courses in basic engineering and sciences in the first year and courses in Civil Engineering starting from the second year. The credit requirements for this programme is given in the below table.
