B.Tech. Programme

The selection to this programme is through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at the national level held every year during the month of April. Only about 1% of the candidates who appear for this examination are selected for admissions to different IITs. Details of this examination can be found at the JEE web site http://www.jee.iitm.ac.in.

Degree Requirements

The B.Tech. programme is a minimum of eight semester full time study programme. Students take courses in basic engineering and sciences in the first year and courses in Civil Engineering starting from the second year. The credit requirements for this programme is given in the below table.

Dual Degree Programme

Admission Requirements

In the Dual Degree programme the students receive a B.Tech. degree and M.Tech. degree in Civil Engineering with specialisation in one of these six streams **: For further details please visit the ordinance page.

M.S. Programme

Admission Requirements

The admission to the M.S. research programme is through interviews conducted in the department.

Eligibility

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from any recognised University for all specialisations in Civil Engineering. In addition, the following non-Civil Engineering degree qualifications are also eligible for different specialisations but M.Sc. degree holders in Science with two years experience admitted to the M.S. programme should take additional engineering courses to acquire enough engineering background.

Building Technology, Construction Materials and Management
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or First Class M.Sc degree in Physics / Applied Science / Material Science with two years experience in Civil Engineering area.

Geotechnical Engineering
M.Sc degree in Mathematics / Physics / Chemistry / Applied Geology with two years experience in Civil Engineering area. Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering with one year relevant experience.

Environmental Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics / Applied Geology / Geophysics with two years experience in Civil Engineering area.

Hydraulics and Water Resource Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics / Applied Geology / Geophysics with two years experience in Civil Engineering area.

Transportation Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or First Class B. E. / B.Tech (Mechanical) working in transportation field.

Degree Requirements

The M.S. programme is a research-based post graduate programme, which consists of five courses and thesis work. The thesis work required for the M.S degree is more advanced than the M.Tech. project work. A Graduate Test Committee (GTC) is formed to monitor the progress of each M.S. candidate. This committee consists of the Head of the Department, guide(s), one member from the department, and one member from an allied department, Students are admitted to the M.S. programme via interviews conducted in the department twice a year.

M.Tech. Programme

Admission Requirements

The M.Tech. programme is a four semester post graduate programme which consists of two semesters of course work and two semesters of project work. The admission for this programme is based on the percentile score in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and personal interviews conducted at IIT Madras. Apart from the above, the Department is offering industry sponsored User Oriented Programme (UOP) in Construction Technology and Management Through L&T Build India Scholarship

Eligibility:

• Final year B.E / B.Tech degree in Civil / Electrical Engineering
• 65 % & above marks in B.E / B.Tech till 06th Semester

The admission to the UOP programme is through Online written test (subject & aptitude) followed by a personal interview conducted by a panel from IIT and L&T.

Degree Requirements

The M.Tech. programme is a four semester post graduate programme which consists of two semesters of course work and two semesters of project work. The students need to complete a certain number of credits, with a final year research project accounting for 35-45 credits (depending on the stream).

Admission Requirements

The candidates short listed based on the GATE score and qualifyingexamination will be called for a test/interview which will be conducted at IIT Madras in coordination with CMRL. Final selection will be subject to medical fitness.

Eligibility

First-class graduates with minimum aggregate average of 70% marks (relaxed by 5% for SC/ST candidates) in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute are eligible to apply. The candidates should have a valid GATE score at the time of applying. Final year students who will secure the eligible degree before the commencement of the course can also apply.

Admission Requirements

The admission to the Ph.D. research programme is through interviews and tests conducted in the department.

Degree Requirements

The course work normally consist of two core courses and at least four electives at the post-graduate level. The duration of this course for full time scholars is 2-5 years and for the external registration people it is 2-7 years. A Doctoral Committee (DC) is formed to monitor the progress of each Ph.D. candidate. This committee consists of the Head of the Department, guide(s), two members from the department, and one member from an allied department, Students are admitted to the Ph.D. programme via interviews conducted in the department twice a year.
