Welcome to the website of the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. Our department has been in existence since the inception of IIT Madras in 1959 and the majority of the department facilities are housed in the Building Sciences Block, which is the first building on campus.\nThe department is managed in six administrative divisions, which are also reflective of the technical expertise of the faculty in the division: [1] Building Technology, Construction Materials and Management (BTCM), [2] Environmental Engineering (EE), [3] Geotechnical Engineering (GT), [4] Structural Engineering (ST), [5] Transportation Engineering (TR) and [6] Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering (HWRE) . We have well-established laboratory facilities in these areas with world-class testing facilities incorporating cutting edge technologies.\nThe academic programmes, B.Tech., M.Tech., Dual Degree, M.S., and Ph.D., offered by our department have achieved global recognition. Our alumni network spans globally with eminent personalities holding prestigious administrative positions and leading academic institutions, industries and government sectors. The rich expertise of faculty members with advanced degrees and/or training from reputed institutions in India, Germany, UK., USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Netherlands, etc. strengthens the academic and research activities of the department. The increasing interactions with national and international academia and industry have truly made our department one of the top choices of students.\nTo ensure that our research/teaching efforts make significant societal impact, we work closely with various private and public agencies and participate in policy making and advising in the implementation of latest technologies in the profession of civil engineering and allied areas. We look forward to the future with a lot of confidence in meeting the expectations of the various stakeholders and fulfilling our obligations of creating the next generation engineers and leaders in academia and industry. We are committed to providing the best quality engineering education to the young minds that join our department, in addition to being active participants in the development of the intellectual ecosystem of our nation and the world.
